Force sensors and force transducers based on strain gauge technology can be used for measuring tensile and pressure forces. The force is measured by identifying the deformation of the transducer object, caused by compression and strain. Thanks to the versatility in strain gauge technology, it is possible to design force transducers that deliver high accuracy at a relatively low cost.
Force transducers have many similarities to load cells, but there are also some considerable differences. Force transducers measure tensile and pressure forces in N, as opposed to load cells measuring mass. Force transducers thus are able to measure both negative and positive forces, caused by compression and strain.
As opposed to load cells, force transducers are calibrated upon delivery and can be put into use immediately on the intended location. In essence, the force transducer is fit to deliver consistent readings regardless of location or times moved. Due to location-specific characteristics like gravity, load cells are preferably calibrated on site.
